Giving Thanks

As an individual member of the Board of Selectmen, I, along with my wife Jeannine, wish to extend our heartfelt wishes to all Sturbridge residents and businesses for a joyous Thanksgiving period.  As well, I offer my sincere gratitude to all residents for allowing me the honor and privilege of serving you.

In addition, we offer thanks to our valued Town employees and the Department Heads that mentor them, along with the many volunteers who tirelessly serve our community providing invaluable and often unrecognized service via the many boards/committees, departments, or other volunteer entities they represent. Without them, our town would simply not function.

So too, we would like to express our gratitude to the residents of this community who have demonstrated uncommon generosity and commitment to improving the quality of life for all Sturbridge residents. We are extremely fortunate to live in a community that places such a high premium on the quality of life enjoyed by its youth, and its seniors. This is clearly evident when one considers the many all-volunteer organizations within our community such as the Ted Foundation, the Tantasqua Music Association, Friends of Sturbridge/Fiskdale Seniors, the Friends of the Joshua Hyde Library, and the REAS Foundation.

Equally vital, are the daily contributions made by volunteer organizations such as Cub Scouts, Brownies, Boy’s and Girl’s Scouts, the MOM’s Club, the Sturbridge Co-op Nursery School, the Sturbridge Lion’s, as well as the many local faith-based organizations here in Sturbridge. Furthermore, we are privileged to enjoy the year-round efforts of the Sturbridge Recreation Committee, including those volunteers who mentor and support our youth sporting programs, along with the many school-based clubs and organizations within the community. Each of these groups provide invaluable opportunities and outlets, towards which residents can channel their hopes and dreams, while also finding respite from the daily challenges life presents.

The remarkable contributions of heart and soul extended by these and other groups are the very foundation that makes Sturbridge such a wonderful community to call home. Undoubtedly, there exists no shortage of differences in any community that can create divides, but it is the amazing and uncommon level of compassion residing within Sturbridge that most often brings us together in support of our young and those no longer so.

As we count our blessings this Thanksgiving, we are most grateful for the priceless gift of compassion extended so often, by so many within our community. Undoubtedly, I’ve omitted some who are certainly deserving of recognition; such stems from a shortage of memory, not a shortage of gratitude. I do offer my apologies for any omissions.

Finally, our thoughts and prayers are with those men and women in uniform – both in the military and public safety - who protect and serve our country and our communities, ensuring the freedom and safety we are all privileged to enjoy.
