Press Release: National Trail Day Local Celebrations

STURBRIDGE, MASS: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with their partners The Grand Trunk Trail Blazers and the towns of Sturbridge and Brimfield are inviting area residents to “Join us on the trail” in participating and enjoying National Trails Day to be held on Saturday, June 7th at the following venues and times:

Brimfield: Join the Brimfield Trail Committee and U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Rangers at the trail head parking lot on 5 Bridge Rd. Program starts at 8:30 a.m. with a bike safety inspection. At 9 a.m., there will be an official ribbon cutting and opening of the 3 mile portion of Grand Trunk Trail East Brimfield Section. Other activities include family bike rides, a trail hike and a historical information presentation by noted Author Larry Lowenthal on the history of the Grand Trunk. The funding for the improvements along this section of the Grand Trunk Trail was made possible by a first in the area “Handshake” agreement between the town of Brimfield and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Sturbridge: Join the Sturbridge Trail Committee, Open Space Committee and the Conservation Commission along with the Heins Family at the trail head parking lot, on Leadmine Rd, one half mile after the intersection of Stallion Hill Rd, on left. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., of the 2.3 miles of trail on the Heins Farm Conservation lands. All the improvements to these trails were made possible by material, equipment and labor donations from 12 construction companies, local businesses, and local civic organizations along with Sturbridge DPW assistance, with volunteers logging over 250 hours. Westville Lake Park: 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; Under the large shelter explore table top displays, information and video presentations on the progress of local trail efforts then join the Park Rangers for two family fun activities planned including a presentation on Geocaching at 1:30 p.m. with the opportunity to locate several Geo caches located in the park and a scavenger hunt hike for kids at 2:30 p.m. For more information on the activities at Westville Park contact Park Ranger Glenna Vitello at Glenna.L.Vitello@usace.army.mil.

National Trails Day, now in its 16th year is made possible through the American Hiking Society, a national voice for America’s hikers. The goals of National Trails Day are to

- Raise awareness of trails and the need to help conserve them;
- Build partnerships and alliances that work together beyond National trails Day; and
- Broaden the constituency for trails.
